News, March 2008
The new Spring Programme is out, and we have a lovely
full programme for everyone to enjoy.
- If you fancy a challenge there’s a series of
walks over 17 miles exploring the South Downs and the Surrey Hills.
Be warned – they’re not for the faint-hearted!
- If you prefer something a little more easy-going, take advantage of the
lighter evenings on one of our new
weekday evening walks.
- Or if you just want to relax, there are social events
of all sorts including pub nights, a boat cruise and even a pub quiz.
Thank you to all our members who have put walks and socials on the programme, to
Chris and Fi Turner for compiling it, and to Anna Elliot and Paul Russell for
proof-reading it. We know it takes a lot of effort and thought, so many thanks to
you all.
We had planned to spend this day checking local footpaths as part of the Ramblers’
Use Your Paths challenge.
However, it turns out that other keen walkers have got there first and all the in
Surrey paths have already been walked!
So we're sticking with the footpath theme and having a
SURG Footpaths day. There will
be two walks, one led by Steve Dodd and the other by Andrea Coates, our Footpath
Secretary. On each walk Andrea and Steve will point out possible footpath problems that
you can look out for, and explain how to report any problems that you find using
our Footpath Report form.
There’s still time to join Orson on a 3-night
Easter weekend break in the beautiful
coastal area of Swanage on the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset. Orson will be leading two
moderately-paced Grade B+ walks on Saturday and Sunday. The terrain is quite hilly,
but the walks won’t be as strenuous as Orson’s other walks on the Spring programme!
You'll need to book your own accommodation.
Contact Orson for more details.
Looking beyond the Spring programme, the SURG diary is looking full already!
- In July we’re returning to Sussex for our annual
Camping Weekend.
- In August we’ll be holding an extra-special
10th Anniversary BBQ in Ripley.
- For September, there's a fantastic trip to the Lake District for
Hikefest 2008
which is being organised by Dave Ebdon, a past Chair of SURG.
- In October, it’s time to hit the dance floor for the annual
Barn Dance in
Leatherhead.
- And finally, save some space in your diary for December’s
Christmas Party Weekend.
There will be more details of all these events and more in our Summer programme,
due out at the beginning of June.
Don’t forget that you can put your photos of SURG walks and socials on our new
photo gallery. There are instructions on how you can upload
your photos yourself, or you can send them to
surgwebofficer@yahoo.com and we'll
upload them for you.
Introduce a friend to membership of the Ramblers and you will get a £10 Rohan voucher
to redeem against purchases of £50 or more at Rohan stores, or online at
www.rohan.co.uk. To take
advantage of the scheme, use the tear-out card in your copy of Walk magazine,
print the form at
www.ramblers.org.uk/gift,
or call 020 7339 8595. Vouchers will be valid until 31st December 2008.
This month’s featured pub is The King's Head, Holmbury St Mary. You could easily miss
this fabulous old pub nestling amidst cottages away from the main road. Open all day,
it’s in prime walking and cycling territory in the heart of the Surrey Hills, with the
Greensand Way passing close by. They serve a range of well-kept ales and usually a
real cider, and the tasty menu includes game alongside other quality fayre. In winter
the open fire is very welcome after a walk down Holmbury Hill, and you may find it
very difficult to wrench yourself away!
